Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour 2 ½ cups
  • Granulated sugar 1 ¾ cups
  • Baking powder 2 ½ tsp
  • Salt ½ tsp
  • Unsalted butter softened 1 cup
  • Eggs 4 large
  • Vanilla extract 2 tsp
  • Whole milk 1 cup
  • Optional Cocoa powder ½ cup

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line the heart-shaped pan (or round and square pans).
  • Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with the dry.
  • Pour batter into prepared pan(s).
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Cool completely before removing from pan and decorating.

Notes

For a DIY heart shape, bake in one round and one square pan. Cut the round cake in half and position it against two sides of the square cake to form a heart.
Flavor variations: Add cocoa powder for chocolate flavor or red food coloring for a red velvet look.
Chill the cake before trimming or decorating for best results.
