Method

  4. Add the breadcrumbs and egg. Gently mix until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  5. Form the mixture into 4 patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
  6. Chill patties on a baking sheet in the fridge for 15–30 minutes to help them hold their shape.
  7. Heat a grill or skillet to medium-high. Oil the grates or pan lightly.
  8. Cook the patties for about 5–6 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  9. During the last minute of cooking, place cheese on top if desired.
  10. Let rest for 3–5 minutes before serving on toasted buns with toppings of choice.
