Close-up of flat white microfoam texture

Name: Starbucks Flat White Drinks

Summary: The Starbucks Flat White is a smooth and velvety espresso-based drink made with two ristretto shots and steamed microfoam milk. Originating from Australia and New Zealand, this drink offers a strong, rich coffee flavor with a creamy finish that’s less foamy than a cappuccino and stronger than a latte.

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • 2 shots of ristretto espresso approx. 1.5 oz
  • 5 –6 oz whole milk or alternative milk: oat, almond, soy, etc.

Equipment

  • Equipment:
  • Espresso machine (with steam wand)
  • Milk frothing pitcher
  • Coffee scale (optional)
  • 6–8 oz ceramic cup

Method

  1. Instructions:
  2. Brew Ristretto Shots: Using your espresso machine, pull 2 ristretto shots (use about 14–18g of finely ground coffee and stop the shot early for a richer concentration).
  3. Steam the Milk: Pour cold whole milk into the frothing pitcher. Use the steam wand to texture the milk until it reaches about 150°F (65°C), forming a fine, silky microfoam.
  4. Swirl & Tap: Gently swirl the milk in the pitcher and tap it on the counter to remove any large bubbles.
  5. Pour Slowly: Begin pouring the steamed milk into the center of the espresso, maintaining a steady flow to mix the crema and milk. Finish with a small white dot or simple latte art.

Notes

Notes:
You can substitute Blonde Espresso for a milder flavor.
Use oat milk for a creamy, non-dairy alternative that closely mimics the original.
Want it iced? Brew the ristretto shots, pour over ice, and add cold, frothed milk instead of steamed milk.
